Bay Regatta kicks off in Phuket

Posted on March 4th, 2015

The Bay Regatta takes to the sea in Phuket tomorrow, with more than 30 sailing yachts and 250 competitors joining this year’s race.

bayregatta

Unlike most other sailing regattas, this event takes the fleet from Phuket through the spectacular scenery of Phang Nga Bay to a new anchorage each evening, with awards parties held in a wide variety of locales.

The event attracts a number of first-time racers joining just for the experience of sailing through some of the world’s most amazing maritime scenery.

Often billed “Asia’s fun regatta”, the hallmark of this event is the casual, fun-filled atmosphere with many families and faces familiar with the Phuket yachting scene returning to the race course, preferring the regatta’s more relaxed approach to racing for the four-day adventure.

The competing yachts are divided into four main classes based on their designs. The “Racing” class has many new entries this year with teams travelling from Australia, Singapore, Russia and Malaysia to challenge defending champion Evgenil Nikiforov on First.

After a number of last minutes cancellations in the bareboat charter class, cruising and charter yachts will be merged into two divisions, and will see the return of last year’s Cruising B winner Kevin Gillow to defend his title.

The largest class of the regatta is the Multihull Class consisting of 10 yachts out to challenge 2014 champion, John Newnham’s Twin Sharks.

The competition starts today with registration and the opening party at the Chandara Resort and Spa Ao Po on the east coast of Phuket.

The first race day, tomorrow, will see competitors sailing out from Ao Po and racing north to the top of Phang Nga Bay, past the famous ramparts of Koh Phanak, the Koh Hong islands and James Bond Island. Racers will then cross the bay, ending the day at one of the area’s unique island hideaways, the Paradise on Koh Yao.

The second race day, Friday, will see the fleet running through the many secluded Koh Pak Bia islands before heading south toward Leam Tong on the northern point of Phi Phi Don Island for a beach party and prize giveaway at PP Erawan Palms Resort.

Saturday will be an opportunity for the yachts to race in crystal clear blue water around the stunning islands of Koh Mai Phi (Bamboo Island) and Koh Yung (Mosquito Island) before racing along the east coast of Phi Phi Don, rounding Koh Bida and returning past Phi Phi Leh to finish in Ton Sai Bay for a party at the Arayaburi Resort.

The final day, Sunday, will see an early start off Tonsai Bay with a spectacular “Spinnaker” start for the traditional downwind sprint to Phuket’s all-year anchorage of Ao Chalong.

The closing party will be held at O2 Beach Club in Chalong and will include live music, a buffet dinner and presentation of the overall prizes by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Phuket’s hotel sector takes a hit from 2014’s market volatility

Posted on February 23rd, 2015

PERFORMANCE in Phuket’s hotel market declined across the board last year as a direct result of the May coup d’etat and an overreliance on mass tourism, new research reveals.

006

The Phuket 2014 Hotel Market Update report from C9 Hotelworks, released this month, shows year-on-year hotel performance in Thailand’s second largest destination after Bangkok dropped in all sectors.

Occupancy contracted by six percentage points, spurring a nine per cent contraction in RevPAR, while average room rates fell by just one per cent.

Nevertheless, the fact that the destination was able to recycle demand during the last four months of the year was hailed as a “silent victory” by Bill Barnett, the report’s author and managing director of C9 Hotelworks.

He told TTG Asia e-Daily: “Phuket, much like Bali, punched the ticket and took the ride on mass tourism…it’s impractical to believe that the trend of sustained growth could continue unabated.”

Meanwhile, the Tourism Council of Thailand projected last year that Thailand could see annual arrivals surge to 40 million, up from about 25 million, within 2018. Such growth would necessitate dependence on volatile mass markets, something which played a factor in Phuket’s poor performance last year when the Russian market collapsed, warned Barnett.

Last year, growth from Phuket’s top two source markets of China and Russia fell from respective four-year averages of 53 per cent and 39 per cent to a yearly rise of just six per cent and four per cent.

Barnett said that geopolitical issues are creating region-wide volatility and that “the toxic triple threat of currency depreciation, travel warnings and the diminishment of resource driven economies has to take a toll on travel”.

“You cannot bury your head in the sand and say, ‘China will save us’, given that every other challenged tourism market in Asia is doing the same thing. Let’s not forget China is vulnerable to broader issues.”

Arrivals from Taiwan plummeted 56 per cent last year, as did the Norway, South Korea and India markets. But Phuket saw growth from lucrative source markets such as Hong Kong (20 per cent), the UK (17 per cent), Japan (nine per cent) and Singapore (five per cent).

Thai VietJet to launch scheduled flights in March

Posted on February 23rd, 2015

Thai VietJet Air will launch its first ever scheduled flights in March 2015, it has been confirmed. The new low-cost venture  will commence flights between Bangkok and Phuket on March 29th.

vietjetair-com-fas

The carrier, which is based at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, started operating charter services in late 2014 but has been waiting to launch its regular scheduled flights.

And the airline said it will finally be able to commence domestic flights in March, ahead of Thailand’s busy Songkran Festival period, following the delivery of a new Airbus A320 aircraft.

Thai VietJet will operate domestic flights from Suvarnabhumi to Phuket, Udon Thani and Krabi, as well as international flights to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

The airline has endured a difficult birth; it was originally a joint venture between VietJet and Thailand’s Kan Air, but the Thai partner’s founder, Somphong Sooksanguan, recently confirmed that he has now sold 41% of his 51% stake in the venture to an unnamed investor.

Speaking to the Bangkok Post, Somphong cited differences between his and VietJet’s business management styles as the main reason for the split.

The original Vietnamese unit, VietJet Air, has also expanded its fleet in time for the country’s Lunar New Year holidays with the arrival of its 21st aircraft.

The new A320 touched down at HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport on 12 February 2015, marking the third out of a huge order for 100 A320s placed by the airline in 2013.  Like all VietJet’s fleet, the new A320 comes fitted with 180 seats in an all-economy class layout.

VietJet now operates approximately 150 flights per day on 28 domestic and international routes across the region, including services to Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan and Cambodia. It is also planning to expand its international network across the Asia Pacific region, from both Vietnam and Thailand.

Phuket beaches return to TripAdvisor ‘Best in Asia’ rankings

Posted on February 20th, 2015

Nai Harn Beach and Kata Beach, both on Phuket’s southwest coast, have ranked in TripAdvisor’s top 10 list for Asia, with two beaches in Krabi also making the grade.

Nai Harn beach ranked third, while Kata beach returned to the rankings, coming in at number eight.

Railey Beach and Phra Nang Beach, in both Krabi, ranked seventh and ninth, respectively.

Travellers’ Choice award-winning beaches were determined based on the quantity and quality of traveller reviews and ratings for beaches on TripAdvisor gathered over a 12-month period.

“It’s that time of year when most people are dreaming of lying on a beach, so it’s the perfect time to unveil the world’s best beaches, based on feedback from the TripAdvisor community,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor.

The news also follows Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong pointing out in December that Phuket had failed to be ranked among the “World’s 100 best beaches” in a CNN Facebook poll last year, but that beaches at Phi Phi Island and Maya Bay had made the grade.

That announcement came at a meeting in Phuket Town where Governor Nisit unveiled the new rules for beach management.

Under the new rules, vendors renting out umbrellas, offering massages or selling food and drinks were allowed to return to Phuket’s beaches – but not vendors who rent out sun-loungers or beach chairs.

“This ensures that the vendors do not detract from the natural beauty of the beaches,” Governor Nisit explained at the time.

“Let’s do this together, and, above all, I want to see Phuket people united in welcoming tourists.”
